Magic Mike’s Last Dance Takes the Lead At The Box Office

Fresh out of director Steven Soderbergh’s back pocket, Magic Mike’s Last Dance has stolen all the eyes post-Super Bowl. The final entry in the Magic Mike series stars Channing Tatum opposite Salma Hayek, playing the signature male stripper trying to find a place in the world. The movie has outdone James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water as well as the newly released 3D version of Titanic. Both the films have inched close to second place, which is also an impressive feat given Avatar was released weeks ago, and Titanic has been a legend for decades now.

Box Office Collections

Magic Mike’s Last Dance made around $8.2 million at the domestic box office. The film has fared comparatively lesser than any of the earlier films in the series but is still a win at the domestic box office. The film was released in approximately 1,550 theatres across the country. The Super Bowl usually gets the most attention, and so films suffer a little, which could be a reason for none of the newer releases going beyond the $10 million mark. Globally, however, the film has so far collected $18.6 million from different countries.

The film is made primarily for streaming on HBO Max. However, it was also released publicly which implies a comparison to the previous installments. The film attracts a lot of female attention because of its themes; however, when it comes to statistics, streaming statistics are usually kept a well-protected secret by HBO Max and not declared to the public. The same does not apply to film theatres.

Soderbergh has had more success with the first film in the series that opened back in 2012. The film opened in twice the cinemas as compared to the new installment and made over $39 million in its opening week. The next film that wasn’t directed by him performed poorly compared to its predecessor, and now, the third film has done even less so. This is likely the main reason Magic Mike’s Last Dance is meant for streaming and not traditional cinema. Here’s the official plot summary of the film:

Mike Lane takes to the stage once again when a business deal that went bust leaves him broke and bartending in Florida. Hoping for one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse — and an agenda all her own. With everything on the line, he soon finds himself trying to whip a hot new roster of talented dancers into shape.

Avatar 2 and Titanic

Avatar: The Way of Water made around $6.9 million this week at the domestic box office, while globally, it grossed another staggering $18.9 million, which now makes it stand at a  total of $2.214 billion. It was right behind Titanic, but now since the film has been re-released, the two James Cameron titans will likely keep on clashing to keep first place. Titanic’s new global collection record stands at $2.217 billion. The film made $22.3 million over the weekend, both domestically and globally combined.

It looks like Magic Mike’s Last Dance still has some competition from two of James Cameron’s best films. However, the film has its own place and its own audience to cater to. It will also earn plenty of revenue and fame from streaming. The only remaining contender is the animated beauty by Universal’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which inched closer and closer to a total of $400 million worldwide this Super Bowl weekend.
